The Benefits of Wormwood
Wormwood has traditionally been used to treat malaria and other infections. An extract from wormwood, known as artemesinin, is what researchers are particularly interested in. What makes this discovery unique, is that researchers have found that by combining artemesinin with iron, the compound is 34,000 times more effective in killing cancerous cells than artemesinin alone. Cancerous cells feed on iron, and have receptors called transferrin receptors, that allow iron to permeate the cell membrane. When artemesinin is combined with iron, the receptors are unable to distinguish between the artemesinin compound, and individual iron molecules. Once the artemesinin permeates the cell wall, it induces cellular apoptosis (cell death).
A Natural Treatment For Breast Cancer
According to research conducted at the University of Washington, and published in "Life Sciences" journal, the artemesinin compound was 98 percent effective in killing breast cancer cells. What's more, is the herbal formula took less than 16 hours to induce apoptosis in cancerous cells. These finding are being viewed as a potentially significant discovery in the fight against cancer. According to lead researcher, Henry Lai, the artemisinin transferrin compound is like a "...Trojan horse, because the cancer cell recognizes transferrin as a natural harmless protein...so the cell picks up the compound without knowing that a bomb - artemisinin - is hidden inside."
This natural breast cancer treatment may sound too amazing to be true, yet the research shows that it is legitimate. But don't go looking for artemesinin in stores just yet, as it could be years before this medication is available by prescription. However, wormwood on its own has shown to be effective in killing cancerous cells, and may be helpful when used in conjunction with other alternative treatments for cancer.
