Each person has experienced some form of emotional trauma throughout their life.  This emotional trauma can come in the form of the loss of a loved one, as well as mental, emotional, or physical abuse, and can cause depression, anxiety, unexplained mood swings, anger, fatigue, and even physical illness.  By understanding the process for healing emotional trauma, healing depression, and healing anxiety, as well as other symptoms of repressed trauma.

The Role of the Ego in Emotional Trauma

The ego is the part of the mind that acts as a defense mechanism, and is part of the biological function for survival.  When we experience emotional trauma, it often causes a fragmentation in the mind, and the pain of the event gets filed away in the unconscious mind.  The ego then becomes active as a way to make sure that you do not have to feel this pain (which it believes is a threat to your survival).  The ego part of the mind, however, is not aware that this mechanism causes feelings of separation, isolation, and pushes away the love that is needed for healing.

When going through the process of healing emotional trauma, it can be necessary to examine the ego defense mechanisms that are keeping the pain repressed within you.  The ego acts to keep you from feeling what has occurred to you, and by consciously overriding the ego, you can allow the emotions to begin surfacing, which is part of healing emotional trauma.  Releasing repressed emotion is the first step to healing.  This happens naturally and gradually by examining belief systems, thoughts, and habitual emotional patterns that can keep you stuck in ego reaction.

As you become more aware of how the ego operates within you, you can choose to allow yourself to feel the repressed pain that has always been there, but unable to come to the surface.  In doing so, you open the door for loving energy to come through you to heal your emotional body, and is instrumental in healing depression and healing anxiety.  Holistic counseling can aid in this process.  Having the support of a holistic therapist who has gone through the process of healing emotional trauma within themselves is far more powerful than someone who has a conceptual understanding of healing trauma only.

Writing in a journal about your feelings is a great way to begin investigating what is happening within you, and taking the time to learn about the ego and how it operates can provide you with invaluable tools for moving beyond the ego.  The spiritual teachings of Eckhart Tolle can be helpful for this.  Healing is a beautiful journey that can transform your experience of life, creating more depth, richness, and joy.   I am a holistic counselor guiding people through this process.  Blessings and Mahalo!
